Activision is best known for their console games of Guitar Hero, the Call of Duty series, and the Tony Hawk skating series. Blizzard Entertainment is best known for their Warcraft and Diablo series. Each company has a cult following of gaming fans that are wary of mergers that result in altering favorite games and brands.
Both companies have reassured the public that both Activision and Blizzard Entertainment will retain their respective corporate philosophies and practices. What will be interesting to follow is the competition this will create between Activision Blizzard and Electronic Arts, best known for their sports and racing games. Electronic Arts is considered the strongest brand name in the gaming industry at the moment. With this new merger, the sports game giant could be seeing a change in the playing field.
With the financial backings of two big companies now working as one, there is great potential here for expanded R&D for new games and software within Activision Blizzard. And with loyal fans assured that this merger will not hurt their current favorites from Activision and Blizzard Entertainment, Electronic Arts will have an interesting time ahead of them to stay in the game.
